In The High Tatras mountainguide service was developing in the same period as in other mountainous parts of Western Europe. E.g. The association of mountain guides in The High Tatras was established in 1874 and, in comparison with alpine countries, in the cradle of alpinism - Chamonix beneath Mount Blanc, the basis of The mountain guide association were set up in 1823. In other parts of The Alps The mountain guide associations started to be formed around 1870.

As in The Alps, also in The High Tatras the early begginings of mountaineering were closely connected with the mountainguide service. Before World War II. There were mostly mountain guides among the most active mountaineers.
At present there is our Mountain guide association in The High Tatras, which is proud of the tradition of its ancestors, but also provides services in a modern way, under the patronage of The National association of mountain guides in Slovakia, which represents the interests of slovak mountain guides in the intrenational organization UIAGM - IVBV and since 1996 we have been its member.
